If the goal is not moral perfection for ourselves, but the maximum benefit for animals, half-measures ought to be encouraged and appreciated. Mr. Steiner rightly rejects this view as morally flawed. Wolves eat sheep. Moreover, I find no way to shine a moral spotlight on one corner without letting shadows fall on another.

We have given an awful exhibition of slaughter and destruction, which may serve as a warning to all mankind. Of course, by now most people know they have been slaughtered by hunters for their ivory. The persecution of these apex predators, especially wolves , is rampant among some hunters and cattle ranchers. But I digress.
