No wildlife species, especially a migratory one shared in common by many nations, can withstand commercial hunting without end. All commercial hunting was banned, and those species were carefully managed for sport hunting only. Commercial hunting of wildlife was always a losing proposition on land.

So, which came first, the underwater flight, the ability to hunt fish, the exceptional ability to live in the cold, or the tuxedo-camouflage?

Tiritiri Matangi Island

On my first visit to the island a few years ago I even found one hunting for sandhoppers and other assorted treats in the washed up seaweed on the beach. I usuaully see Saddlebacks when I go to Kapiti, and often when I go to Karori, but they are everywhere on Tiritiri. Saddleback ( Philesturnus carunculatus ) on the beach.
