Rip Van Winkle’s Crow Killing Contest

I am not anti-hunting. The “Crow Down” is a “hunting contest” where both adults and children slaughter as many crows as they possibly can in two days. A hero of the Rip Van Winkle Rod & Gun Club is – no doubt – Bob Aronsohn, who lives in Kansas and in December 2013 celebrated killing his 150,000th crow.

Lest you think that modern technology robbed all the challenge from my hunt, though, I would point out that there were a couple of confounding factors. First, we were on a schedule that, while not tight, did involve being in Kansas City before nightfall. A helpful site gave me not only the block, but the very backyard to check!

Duck Stamps and the Best National Wildlife Refuges for Birding

Not long ago, I posted a list of the 25 best National Wildlife Refuges for birding. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has published a list of NWRs that have been created or expanded with Duck Stamp funds. Quivira NWR (Kansas): 99.1%. How important are 10,000 or 100,000 or even 1,000,000 acres and where are those acres anyhow?
