For my new book, due out in 2012 from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, I’ve been researching sandhill crane hunting. Nationwide, wildlife watchers now outspend hunters 6 to 1. I’ve received letters and emails from a number of avid hunters who find the concept of shooting cranes repugnant.

Over 3 million pairs of Antarctic Fur Seals breed on South Georgia, saved from near extinction by fur hunters. Seals and Whales are also given a lot of attention, with entries organized similarly to the bird species accounts. Southern Elephant Seals and Weddell Seals are also resident, though not in such large numbers.
