It just so happens that after I read Bea's comment from yesterday about reaching kids with our message I saw a New York Times article from today called " Where Little Chefs Learn the Art of Slicing and Dicing ," by Ann Farmer. Are the kids cooking monkey, cat, dog, alligator or turtle? But I bet anything doesn't go.

There are are presently thought to be five species of kiwi with a possible sixth extinct species, all of which have suffered varying degrees of range contraction since the arrival of humans. The Bay of Islands is a very popular area for tourists, both those looking for natural history and for human history. Wicked, right?

Kokako ( Callaeas cinerea ) The island holds plenty of other New Zealand endemics, including Stitchbirds , Red-crowned Parakeets , Variable Oystercatchers , Bellbirds and most recently (although we did not see them) Riflemen.
