At 8am on Tuesday 30th August 2012, we arrived at Leeudril after leaving nearby Tweerivieren camp and were thrilled to spot a young female Leopard next to the water tank. You can notice in the above images how the Leopard uses her eye-lids as hoods to protect her sensitive eyes from the bright sun as she sprinted towards us.

After a few hours we guesstimated that the pack had moved south and after checking the shooting range (where the park rangers tasked with the unenviable responsibility of protecting the park’s rhinos practised their art) we joined the road to the less touristy southern part of the park. We were stunned, simply stunned. No rest though.

It’s all about the improbable intersection of human beings and Emperor Penguins, and if I can’t make it to an Emperor Penguin colony (highly unlikely), reading this book has been the next best thing. It’s part memoir, part travelogue, part scientific narrative, part prologue to making an argument for Antarctic conservation.

An African Penguin peers protectively around its fluffy chick. Today, there are more than 3,000 birds at this accessible colony and they are protected by fences and stiff fines for human disturbance. But there is one Cape bird that stands head and shoulders above the rest when it comes to character – the African Penguin.

The books work best when the birding is coupled with the human element. There is little factual material here about global conservation and protection, but that is not the book’s purpose. This is the birding adventure book supreme. Now that I’m a little further down the birding road, Big Year books are my “good read” of choice.

Lacey of Iowa introduced the nation’s first wildlife-protection law, which banned the interstate shipping of unlawfully killed game. The Amur Leopard ( Panthera pardus orientalis – above) is just one majestic animal on the Critically Endangered (CR) list with less than 100 individuals in the wild due to hunting for its fur.
