To the Editor: Re “ Another Horse-Racing Horror ” (editorial, May 6): Thank you for adding your voice to the many who are demanding that the welfare of racehorses should come before profits. Most wind up auctioned off for a few dollars each and sent to the foreign slaughterhouses to be made into pet food or dinner for someone overseas.

On "Pets" and "Its"

When referring to cats, dogs and horses of unknown sex, the children would randomly assign sex, with the conventionally "prettier" animals being called "she." We need language that doesn't support a divide between "pet" animals and everyone else. Meanwhile, the lizard has a male name so you'd think he'd be called "he."
