To the Editor: Re “ Another Horse-Racing Horror ” (editorial, May 6): Thank you for adding your voice to the many who are demanding that the welfare of racehorses should come before profits. Most wind up auctioned off for a few dollars each and sent to the foreign slaughterhouses to be made into pet food or dinner for someone overseas.

On "Pets" and "Its"

I went back to New York to the areas where I grew up and went to college and graduate school for a five-day weekend. When referring to cats, dogs and horses of unknown sex, the children would randomly assign sex, with the conventionally "prettier" animals being called "she." The Nor'easter cured me of that longing.
