Gutierrez, Justice, and Mesker were camping with classmates from Punahou, usually described as “a prestigious Honolulu prep school.” The young men had severed the birds’ legs in order to remove the tags. Biologist Lindsay Young says it will take 8 years to replace the breeding birds; 14 years of research and data have been destroyed.
