Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. New moral vegetarianism, however, rests on moral arguments couched in terms of human welfare. Various lobby groups, world food organizations, and consumer and environmentalist groups putting pressure on meat producers to utilize these waste products to feed animals might be a much more effective way of conserving grain than vegetarianism.
