These beaters usually take the form of grazing herds of game and domestic animals, and large flocks of carmine bee-eaters may gather overhead. After breeding they also disperse over the rainforests and savannas of West and Central Africa, where they hunt for aerial insects.

Africa’s Barbets

This image was taken in Nsuta Forest, Ghana. Image taken in Selous Game Reserve, Tanzania. Bristle-nosed Barbet is a West African sister species of Gray-throated. These barbets nest colonially in dozens of holes bored into dead rainforest trees. The four Stactolaema barbets are generally a little more colorful than the Gymnobuccos.
