They were secure in their isolated home here until humanity came to Laysan in the 1890s.

According to Stanley Temple, a professor emeritus of conservation at the University of Wisconsin, “the extinction was part of the motivation for the birth of modern 20th century conservation.” We have given an awful exhibition of slaughter and destruction, which may serve as a warning to all mankind.
