The United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit recently heard arguments in National Meat Association v. Brown, a case in which the meat industry is attempting to invalidate a California law designed to reduce animal suffering and protect public safety. Did anyone know this was going on?

If you've ever wondered why I have a clinical view of the meat industry, it's because I worked for three years in the accounting department of a very large shrimp importer that also sold finfish, shellfish and value-added products (ie. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. However, the factory farm system we have in any country does not lend itself to either of the two criteria. There are probably no happy animals in factory farming (ie. Factory animals are voiceless victims. Here is my opinion.

The only cool thing is that Gene Bauer's views on the meat industry are so similar to those expressed on this blog a few weeks ago. Humane treatment runs counter to the entire industry when the point is to make money by processing these animals as fast as possible. How many people know this about the Animal Welfare Act?
