I’d love to have known where and when the Great Spotted Woodpecker in my photograph below was ringed, but though the ring is clearly visible, the number stamped on it isn’t. They are of the race islandica , a sub species of the nominate race, limosa. Whether it has been seen again I don’t know, but I found its history fascinating.
