I’m not sure why all the birds scattered at its approach, Frigatebirds are known for stealing the catch of other birds, not for killing elegant, cinnamon-chested Avocets, but scatter they did and only a couple of hundred came back down. This was the High Island Experience, I was told. Wood Thrush! It was amazing.

Barbaro, the magnificent thoroughbred who broke his leg two weeks after winning the 2006 Kentucky Derby (I watched both races live), was put to death after taking a turn for the worse in his recovery. Barbaro's killing is a case of euthanasia. Euthanasia is often called mercy killing, for obvious reasons: Its motive is mercy.
