These species, recorded by early European explorers, are now sadly extinct, but the disjunct distribution is something of a mystery. Compared to that of say the Collared Kingfisher , for example, it would hardly raise an eyebrow. My first complaint about Forshaw’s treatment of the kakariki is taxonomic.
