Strangely, the usually fairly accurate eBird description also fails to mention the beautiful blue around the eyes of the species: “Dark rufous above and grayish-white below, with a silver ear patch, bright white throat, and a black patch around the eye.” The majority (63%) were recorded in locations outside the species’ range.

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.
