Many refuges are strategically located along major flyways, allowing ducks and geese to hopscotch their way up the continent to northern breeding grounds and back down again. Several endangered species are (or have been) highly dependent on specific tracts of federal land.

On our last visit to the grasslands of Manas we saw not one but two endangered Bengal Floricans in fifteen minutes, with a Pied Falconet thrown in for good measure! Commoner species include Bar-headed Geese , parakeets, shrikes, mynas and minivets.

The Orange-fronted Parakeet is a critically endangered species that I came agonisingly close to seeing but didn’t. Southern White-faced Owl or African Scops Owl ? New Zealand: The Didn’t Bloody Even See It Award. But I still heard it, and was privileged to spend time in it’s home. I still have no idea.
