Disappointed with a Florida Fork-tailed Flycatcher

To be honest, this was actually a bit of a downer for me. While I did get nice pictures of a Fork-tailed Flycatcher , the ratty tail of this bird combined with the fact that I got to enjoy and photograph a beauty of a fork-tailed in Connecticut just a few moths ago , did make this a bittersweet event.

In 1952, at least in the US, no one wanted to be a Debbie Downer. The Heath Hen had gone extinct two decades before, but we could plausibly blame Mother Nature for the final knock-out events and there hadn’t been any loss of cuddly megafauna from our fair shores since then.

Lost Among the Birds: A Review of a Big Year Book

The chapter titles, one for each year, thankfully change from downers like “The Bluebirds of Unhappiness” to the knowingly corny (“Winning the Booby Prize” wins the prize). I am happy to see an index that is quite thorough in coverage, including the many friends and birders who make appearances as well as birds, places, and personal events.
