Chimpanzees and elephants grieve the loss of family and friends, and gorillas hold wakes for the dead. Dogs appear to be able to detect different cancers—ovarian, lung, bladder, prostate, and breast—and diabetes, perhaps by assessing a person’s breath. The 10-year-old dog and 4-month-old joey eventually became best friends.
