Charles Pease shot the bird in northeastern Ohio, and gave it to his father-in-law, Jared Kirtland, one of those 19th century men who was a master multitasker–physician, horticulturist, legislator, zoologist. Kirtland, in turn, gave the skin to Dr. Spencer F. Rapai is clearly fascinated by Leopold’s life, and frankly, so was I.

The African or Angola Pitta is the holy grail of the Southern African birder and definitely the “most-wanted” bird in our region. This is so unfair. Close enough… What about me?
