Charles Pease shot the bird in northeastern Ohio, and gave it to his father-in-law, Jared Kirtland, one of those 19th century men who was a master multitasker–physician, horticulturist, legislator, zoologist. Kirtland, in turn, gave the skin to Dr. Spencer F. Rapai is clearly fascinated by Leopold’s life, and frankly, so was I.
