Much like every beautiful sandy beach, the human encroachment is substantial. The State of Oregon, in 1975 listed the bird as Threatened, and the Oregon Fish and Wildlife reaffirmed that status in 1989 under the Oregon Endangered Species Act. There is little doubt about the serious nature of the threat to this bird.
