I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. My hosts could confidently tick off the species on their life list. I flew into Denver from Mexico. I ticked off 9 lifers.

I recently traveled to Texas and made a trip to Hagerman NWR (an “Honorable Mention”), which is north of Dallas. According to eBird , 340 species have been observed at the “ Hagerman NWR ” hotspot, which ranks as No. The overall refuge , which includes all of its hotspots, has 344 species. I have been to 22 of 35.)
