To the Editor: Re “ Humanity Even for Nonhumans ,” by Nicholas D. If human beings were confined, mutilated and killed, would we call it “humane” if the cages were a few inches bigger, the knife sharper, the death faster? Animals rescued from so-called humane farming establishments have been found in horrific condition.

September 7, 2006, a bill banning the slaughter of horses for human consumption( H.R. There is no ethical justification for killing an animal for no good reason. Calling an inhumane practice "humane" does not make that practice humane. Calling an inhumane practice "humane" does not make that practice humane.

Ethical vegetarianism is the thesis that killing and eating animals is morally wrong whenever equally nutritious plant-based alternatives are available. Causing an animal to suffer for no good reason is cruel, and our ordinary commonsense morality tells us in no uncertain terms that cruelty is wrong. We all do.
