The ground for this will not be animal welfare, as you might expect, but environmentalism. The best thing that one can do for animals, in the long run, is to persuade people to stop eating them.

It's just another excuse people have concocted because they like the taste of cow/pig/chicken/fish flesh. We can care about animals and people at the same time; they're not mutually exclusive. Yes, it is hypocritical (speciesism), but who said that we either protect humans or animals? Where do people get that idea?
