Like the Rockies, though, this is a harsh beauty, not an ideal climate for the human animal by any means. Most of all, there is isolation — Ferret Camp, 20 miles from the next nearest human habitation, represents the farthest from civilization I have ever been.

Twice in the past 24 hours (once here and once on Stephanie's blog, in the comments )I have come across the following statement: "[insert animal here] are safe from predators, get fed regularly, and are better off on farms than if they were in 'the wild.'" The choice isn't the wild or the farm. It's not pretty.

Riddle me this: What's the difference between a cow and someone on death row? For one thing, the cow has not been convicted of some heinous crime. The cow will be executed simply because she is a cow. Where's the moral objection on behalf of cows?

As long as the animals aren't on a farm or otherwise being used by humans, I love the idea of animals in the lives of babies. Much of the baby clothing has animals on it, and animals are of course the focus of stuffies and other toys. She can always choose justice and respect.
