It is certainly likely that a similar phenomenon would occur if vegan vegetarianism became a widespread movement in the U.S. The trouble is, of course, that it is not clear what tacit approval is supposed to mean. There is another reason that could be given for not eating meat in view of the present inhumane treatment of animals.

The veracity of this statement hinges on Scott's definition of "inhumane," and that definition must be very, very restricted, and clearly unrelated to the realities of our modern factory farm system.
