Birding Hongbenghe, Yunnan (Part 1)

10,000 Birds

It is a bit worrying that while the Basel Zoo is listed by Google as having a page on the Red-tailed Laughingthrush , that page itself does not seem to exist anymore, and the species is not listed among the inhabitants of the aviary of the zoo. Quite possibly, this laughingthrush is now locally extinct in Switzerland or at least in Basel.

On SPECIESISM, by Joan Dunayer

Animal Person

Whenever the media report that someone has killed "an endangered animal" or "an endangered species," they too confuse an individual with a species. Any animal threatened with a gun or arrow is endangered. Hunters kill members of endangered species. To be consistent (and nonspeciesist).

The Economic Impact of Birding on National Wildlife Refuges: Creating Local Jobs

10,000 Birds

Activities such as hunting, fishing, and trapping are categorized as “consumptive” uses. In contrast, consumptive uses were minor: fishing accounted for 10 percent and hunting was just 4 percent. Of course, the study does not purport to rank refuges based on visitation-based economic output, as that is just one metric.

The Nonessential Whooping Crane

10,000 Birds

So, one might surmise, it’s OK if they get shot by hunters thinking they’re sandhill cranes? What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.

What’s Up with the ABA?  Part II (Some Suggestions)

10,000 Birds

Of course, it should include an offer to join the ABA, perhaps at a discounted rate. Of course, anything that resonates with more birders is good, as the ABA needs additional members to address its financial problems. Such articles are fine, of course, but not at the expense of all content for beginning and intermediate birders.

We Should Kill More Lions

10,000 Birds

Clearly, in the face of near universal condemnation from the internet masses, there is only one course of action for me. Hunters go to Africa to shoot lions, and this is without question a good thing; for birds, for ecosystems, and for lions in general! Hunters are prepared to spend a lot of money for the privilege of shooting a lion.

Come@Me: Hunting Is Not Conservation

10,000 Birds

The definition of the word HUNT is “to chase or search for game or other wild animals for the purpose of catching or killing.” ” Obviously the dictionary does not equate hunting with conservation. If you have some insane idea that Hunting Is Conservation: I think we all remember the fate of the Passenger Pigeon ?
