I suppose speciesism/human exceptionalism is at the heart of the matter. Essentially, industrialized farming=soulless, small family farm=soulful.

I went back to New York to the areas where I grew up and went to college and graduate school for a five-day weekend. Also, the have families (as if other animals don't). And the reverse is true: If parents are unaware, it should be no surprise that whatever compassion or sense of justice a child has is not nurtured.
