But they're already on a path of compassion and caring about those other than themselves, so in my experience they're the perfect people to gently nudge in the direction of concern for sentient nonhumans. Many animals also display wide-ranging emotions, including joy, happiness, empathy, compassion, grief, and even resentment and embarrassment. Chimpanzees and elephants grieve the loss of family and friends, and gorillas hold wakes for the dead. I also watched a red fox bury her mate after a cougar had killed him.
