Call me old fashioned if you like, but I rather like many of these old names, as they put a bit of colour and interest into birding, especially if you bother to investigate who exactly the birds are named after. Collecting birds was clearly a dangerous pastime. Wagner wasn’t the only one to have died from gunshot wounds.

Tribes and Birds of the Lower Omo Valley by Adam Riley

It lies adjacent to Nechisar National Park, where the lone wing of the mysterious Nechisar Nightjar was collected in 1990. They adorn their bodies with decorative scarification, a painful process of slicing into the skin and rubbing the wounds with charcoal. This tribe is famed for the incredible lip plates that the women wear.
