Apparently, while in Egypt waiting for a boat to return to Germany he collected specimens of the bird which is now named after him. The Southern Banded Snake-Eagle is listed as Near Threatened as there is only an estimated global population of 1000–3000 individuals. Never happens to me when I am waiting for a bus.

Traditionally, the slow season, but the beats have mopped their collective brow and outdone their previous efforts. Black Eagle – Ictinaetus malaiensis. Blyth’s Hawk-Eagle – Nisaetus alboniger. Crested Serpent-Eagle – Spilornis cheela. Germain’s Swiftlet – Aerodramus germani.

So, the birds start collecting mud and small sticks. I wonder what Americans would think if, in a Wikipedia entry, a Bald Eagle would be illustrated using a photo taken at an Albanian zoo. However, they sometimes claim to be the national bird of Germany due to their black-red-yellow color combination – this is not true.
