His passion and compassion for humans is immense, but he appears to have some kind of mental block with nonhuman animals. Kristof writes of the "decent and varied lives" that small farms provide animals with. Food for my soul does not involve grilled greyhound any more than it involves grilled chicken.

We "traditionally" have applied our social mores in some places and not others, and we should go back to "tradition," which I bet has something to do with continuing to care about our dogs while continuing to feign care for "farm animals," as they're value is as food only. Scott's assumption is that we profit from certain animals.
