The coastal subspecies of California Gnatcatcher ( Polioptila californica californica ) can be found in sage scrub that was once abundant from Ventura County to northern Baja California. As a result, the bird has a long history with the Endangered Species Act. FWS released a 5-year review of the species in 2010.

Osborn, a passionate field biologist who participates to the core of her being three re-introduction projects aimed at saving three very different, endangered species: Peregrine Falcon, Hawaiian Crow (‘Alala)*, and California Condor. As of 2024, the ‘Alala are extinct in the wild though they live on in captivity.
