Sadly the great gannet colonies during the July to October period to protect the birds, but if you head up to Boundary Stream you’ll find a good mix of lowland and mountain forest where active management is keeping forest birds going. At sea there are also New Zealand Sea Lions and Southern Right Whales.

An African Penguin peers protectively around its fluffy chick. Today, there are more than 3,000 birds at this accessible colony and they are protected by fences and stiff fines for human disturbance. Sharks, Cape Fur Seals and even Killer Whales will prey on them in the ocean.

There is a very distinctive smell found on seabird colonies, where thousands upon thousands of birds come to breed and, coincidentally, deposit large quantities of waste. A great place to watch whales and pelagic seabirds. Notice the correct Farallon Fashion accentuated by contributions from angry gulls. It’s a hot sunny day.
