In light of this horrible incident, is it right for the zoo to carry on a breeding program that subjects more animals to such unnatural lives? Many sanctuaries do not permit breeding. Lisa Edmondson, Los Angeles The zoo, surely, carries responsibility for deficiencies in its enclosure. Finally, what of the audience?

Following passage of the United States Endangered Species Preservation Act of 1966, the California Condor ( Gymnogyps californianus ) was among the first 75 species listed for protection, the so-called “Class of 1967”. Part of its obscurity is due to the fiercely protective relationship Cologne has with its beer.

And, because of a special family event (see below), I happened to be in Los Angeles County over the Thanksgiving holiday. There is a small resident population in Polk County, Florida, in the middle of the peninsula, mostly on protected land, and once in a while they show up in a place where they can be easily observed.
