The Uncommon Demise of a Wood Thrush in Costa Rica

On the breeding grounds of the north, a small bird flies into the night, takes a bearing for the south, gains altitude and flies onward. In Costa Rica, they can take the form of everything from toucans (think crows with giant shark inspired beaks) to herons and monkeys. The rails did indeed come to investigate but came up empty-beaked.

A Question of Migration

People were doing things like that with birds, sharks, and humans. Loons hardly ever fly when they are on their breeding grounds or their winter-water, but the migration is for many loons a non-trivial distance. The idea was to see if those without magnets taped to their heads got less lost then those with the magnets. Image source.
