This special place in a birder’s heart or on a list of best birds of the year certainly pertains not only to their extravagant lifestyle but also to the fact that most birders – particularly visiting birders – often struggle with finding them. You see, we get two different subspecies of dippers in Germany.

Please keep that in mind if you ever think that Germany’s only contributions to the world are highways and world wars. Finally, the Yellow Bittern is one of my favorite birds in Singapore, and it is much easier to see here than in its breeding grounds in Shanghai.

There was a breeding pair at Binjiang Forest Park this June. However, they sometimes claim to be the national bird of Germany due to their black-red-yellow color combination – this is not true. This one seems to wonder about whether eating flies is the right lifestyle choice though. Not going for the obvious either.
