They often build their nests in open savannas where it sticks out like a sore thumb. The link above will elaborate that our federal government turned down the option to include this species on the Endangered Species Act a few years ago. At that point the estimated population was between 11,000-14,000 birds.

Another 170 are in captivity, many of them breeding stock for reintroduction efforts. What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death.
