The only unstreaked pipit around here and a characteristic breeder of sand dunes is the Tawny Pipit and this one shows well, holding to the grass edge. They are quite a rare breeding species in Serbia, declining as we speak, but one pair breeds nearby. Two European Rollers await us on the wires, while one Eurasian Hoopoe flies by.

Personally, I love exploring new hotspots and discovering new or unusual species when visiting a country. This phase is to familiarize with the species that can be seen. Search for species (or subspecies) endemic to the area visited. Search for my target species (i.e. This is usually easily found on Google.

The next hour plus netted me a host of other species, including my two other targets, Virginia Rail and Common Gallinule. As always, the woods around the marsh were busy with breeders setting up shop. From Shawangunk I headed just down the road to Blue Chip Farm to see if I could find Upland Sandpipers.

It is not particularly big but has a reported 430 bird species including migrants, though during my short stay it seems I missed most of the key attractions among them. Great White Pelican is not just the name of a non-existent glam-rock band but also of a bird species. Pel’s Fishing Owl, where were you? UysI and G.

When we factor in a precarious trip punctuated with such hazards as stalking, demon-flight Peregrines , trigger happy humans, missing habitats, and other nasty situations, maybe those non-breeders are the smart ones? This is a regular site for this species. They were filled with blooming cotton and not much else.

Despite recording 370 species during the month, the list total has advanced by just 45. Just to confuse things a little, only 14 new species were recorded since June 1 st. Chomes–Calle San Agustín and farms. As at June 30 th , it stands at 1796. Grasshopper Sparrow – Ammodramus savannarum. Negri-Nepote Grasslands.
