Now, here in Colorado this is the season for the high-country birds. The grasslands have been popping off with breeders for well over a month, but the snow is just now giving way to lush alpine meadows and rocky tundras. This is my time of year to explore thin air and look for unique Colorado breeders.

Common , Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers all breed here, but Red-breasted is the more northerly of the group. However, a place like Colorado offers mild winters and there is usually open water scattered around the Front Range. Hooded Mergansers however, are local breeders and can’t always be found so readily.
