Of course, various species of bats as well. Thankfully, they now have a home here where they can court, build their nest, and raise their young. Life here is experiencing a boon in the face of encroaching human activity, at least in my immediate vicinity. I do miss going out – but I’m not sure how much!

Swift Care Ontario: Sometimes It Takes a Village

Just as it takes a village to raise a child, it sometimes takes a “village” of rehabbers to save threatened wildlife. As a result of human interference, four Chimney Swift nestlings had to be rescued. For the next two and a half weeks Sue continued to raise them, along with four other swifts she had in care.

One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. Presumably, the species also not only eats fruit but also mammals and possibly birds –the HBW specifically mentions the species catching bats emerging from caves at dusk, and feeding them to juveniles.
