They breed in the arid inland areas in Mongolia and northern China and then migrate south into coastal parts of south-east Asia and northern Australia. They roost in literally thousands taking advantage of the sea breeze and then returning to the plains to feed in the evening.

This cyclone has been named Cyclone Iggy and is a dominant circle on our satellite image of Western Australia. We scanned through the flock thoroughly looking for individually marked birds and we had a Red-necked Stint that had been flagged and banded/ringed in Bohai Bay, China. They were probably not born when Iggy Pop was famous!
