The following is a guest post about the horrors of shark finning. Sharks are a regular feature on television channels like the Discovery Channel, with even entire weeks devoted to this majestic sea creature. Shark finning is the practice of removing fins from live sharks with sharp tools, and then tossing the shark back into the ocean.

Fall is the transition season, and for a while I used to be the transition guy, linking up the crazy summer seabird season on the Farallon Islands with the slightly more laid back fall landbird and shark season there. Under the surface we could sea Oceanic Sunfish and Blue Sharks. A Pigeon Guillemot late in the season.

The most common species we see are the Stoke’s Sea Snake Astrotia stokesii , Dubois’ Sea Snake Aipysurus duboisii and the Olive Sea Snake Aipysurus laevis. By plumage and distribution, they can very roughly be divided into 2 groups (probably not reflecting taxonomic relations): One group inhabits central Asia ( personata ), the mountains of southern Asia ( alboides ), central East Asia ( leucopsis ) and the Pacific coast from the southern half of Kamchatka to Japan ( lugens ).
