These mangroves function as a sanctuary for fish and other animals that then make their way as adults across the channel to the coral reefs that surround the island. Swimming with a whale shark on the boat-trip to Isla Isabel. The frigates are by far the most numerous and evident of the island’s nesting species.

An Amazing Boat Ride from Santa Cruz Island to Ventura Harbor

It took me awhile, but I managed to get on quite a few, especially when the boat slowed down to go check out some Humpback Whales and a huge number of Common Dolphins. Sooty Shearwaters and a Western Gull fly back the aftermath of a Humpback Whale breaching. Humpback Whale Megaptera novaeangliae. It was amazing.

As a proof, two Dalmatian Pelicans are flying low above us, while a Bluethroat disappears into the nearby bush. I already have a history of searches for this species. One Nilgai – the largest of Asian antelopes and a few Sambar deer later, we hit a jackpot: there is one jackal-like animal sitting among the dry leaves!

Hey, What About the Great Auk?

That’s one reason, probably the biggest reason, why we don’t have centennials for animals that become extinct in the wild. And we did , for the Peregrine Falcon and Osprey , the Brown Pelican and Bald Eagle. A species, wiped off the earth, never to exist again. We could do it! Then the 80s happened. What a horror!
