This time they appear more relaxed, but nervousness might be a better policy: between 2013 and 2017, well over a thousand rhinos were annually poached in South Africa.

Animals of Kruger National Park by Keith Barnes is the animal guide I wish I had when I visited South Africa. It would have been useful to have more information about the rest camps that define each route, but I understand that there is a fine line (maybe even a broad one) between writing an animal guide and a tourist guide.

The others follow, some dozen animals in all. We are nearing the waterhole, and see the large oval shadow in the darkness: that White Rhino cow with a calf. If such a trend continues, we will lose these animals for good! Painted Dogs are already extinct in 25 out of 39 countries that they used to inhabit.

• Tigers and other big cats are able to mimic other animals, tigers in specific mimic deer, bear, cattle and monkeys and the South American Margay can mimic the call of baby monkeys to lore adults. Deer, cattle, camel and goats are more closely related to dolphins and whales then they are with horses. . •

And the morning before the Mkuze pack of Painted Wolves, or African Wild Dogs, had been very close to one of the park’s few Lions, as far as tracking collars had told. We hadn’t been on the road long before a shout went out that a dog had been seen, and we quickly turned back, and there was my first Painted Wolf in Mkuze.

The interests of those working for conservation and those working for animal rights and animal welfare don’t always perfectly align like you might think they do. Shoot a few lions in the Selous and you protect a viable population of African Wild Dogs, a much more endangered species. You do a lot of good.
