On Humane Societies and Calf-Roping

If the Vancouver Humane Society is on the side of the animals, why focus on calf-roping? I find it hard to believe that that's the only event they think is a disgusting show of injustice and "bullying.". But the HSUS is by no means an animal-rights organization; it is an animal welfare organization.
