In responding to Suzie’s post defending wildlife rehabilitation I began to think again about the areas in which animal rights and animal welfare overlap with the field of conservation, and the ways in which they don’t. And people that work in either conservation or animal welfare tend to like animals.

What could motivate gunmen (I cannot call them hunters) in two states to deliberately kill North America’s tallest and most critically endangered bird? It may be as sick as deliberately targeting an endangered species for death. In the only state in the Central Flyway that protects cranes from hunting.

This Lion should not be shot, as it is a protected reserve that forbids shooting. The interests of those working for conservation and those working for animal rights and animal welfare don’t always perfectly align like you might think they do. Lions are a resource, and one to be managed and protected.
