In " Move to Limit 'Factor Farms' Gains Momentum " in today's New York Times , we learn that farmers in Ohio have agreed to phase out gestation crates within 15 years and veal crates by 2017. Irv Bell's farm is a family farm. It's also a factory farm. And all of those are implicit in "farm."

The idea of family is currently being used by the dairy industry in a series of commercials with the tag line: "99% of dairy farms are family owned." Ninety-nine percent of dairy farms are family owned. Families, so the commercials go, don't engage in untoward aspects of animal husbandry that might hurt the cows.

There are few animal rights stories in the news. Not the day, the film, where Bill Murray experiences the same day over and over again. That's respect.

The discussion about the environment usually originates in the massive problems created by the factory farming of sentient nonhumans. Who needs to eat animals when you can have delicious, low fat, high fiber, nutritious meals that are light on carbon footprint and don't involve killing anybody? Veganism, to me, is about justice.

Other than being a vegan, the most important actions you can take to help animals who are used for food are: Give generously to organizations that help those sentient nonhumans directly, such as Peaceful Prairie Sanctuary , Maple Farm Sanctuary , Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary and Eastern Shore Sanctuary.
