To the Editor: In “ Hunting Deer With My Flintlock ” (Op-Ed, Dec. He says he hunts out of a need to take responsibility for his family, who evidently live where the supermarkets offer no meat. Animals suffer when killed. It is only the prejudice of our species that justifies culling the deer population while protecting our own.

Of course, when hamburgers aren't at stake, most of us think that it would be morally wrong to kill an animal for no good reason.

To the Editor: Your editorial against my proposal to thin the elk herd in Theodore Roosevelt National Park (“ Elk Hunting in the Badlands ,” July 8) missed the mark in several key respects. First, nobody has proposed creating “a broad precedent for public hunting in the national parks.” My proposal does no such thing.
